Unexpected Blessings
When Magnolia Bible College announced that it was closing its doors two weeks into the fall semester, many students were left wondering what their futures held. John Potter was one of those students. He had been preaching since his freshman year in high school, and had left a fulltime work at the Bold Springs congregation in McEwen, Tennessee to attend Magnolia. When the news came, he spoke with his high school minister, Hoby Grace (‘03), who recommended his alma mater.
John spoke with HCU’s admissions office, and by the weekend he had moved, for a second time in as many weeks, into the dormitory on the HCU campus. A true freshman, John is happy that HCU is his new home. “I’m glad it ended up the way it did,” he says. “Heritage is amazing. My classes are great and I’ve learned to make new friends and establish new relationships. It’s been a great experience.” John plans to work in pulpit ministry when his university years are over.
Meanwhile, Magnolia student Sam Allmond was also trying to determine where to continue his education. As a junior, he needed a place that would allow him to graduate as close to his intended date as possible, and that would continue with the ministry focus he had enjoyed at MBC.
John Potter, who had already made the decision to relocate to HCU, suggested that Sam speak with HCU’s admissions office. “I needed to make a quick decision, and I’d heard good things about Heritage,” Sam says. He made the move to Florence that weekend and now shares a dorm with John. A Mississippi native, Sam is pursuing his lifelong dream of fulltime ministry work. “I really couldn’t see myself doing anything else,” he says. He wants to be involved with mission work in some way, and is hoping to find local ministry work while he completes his education.
It wasn’t the way John and Sam had life planned, but as always, God was working to see them through.
